Invisible Chemical Threats: How Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Are Putting Women’s Health at Risk

As the use of plastics and everyday consumer products continues to rise globally, health and environmental experts are raising serious concerns about the growing impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)—toxic substances that interfere with the body’s hormonal system. These chemicals pose a particularly high risk to the health of women and girls, with long-term consequences for future generations.

In collaboration with the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN), the Rwandan civil society organization ARECO–RWANDA NZIZA has launched a public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of EDCs, especially chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenols, including Bisphenol A (BPA), which are widely found in plastic products used daily.

Scientific evidence highlights the severity of the problem

Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) show that people around the world tested in various studies were found to have traces of bisphenols and phthalates in their bodies. These chemicals have been detected in urine, blood, the placenta, and even in amniotic fluid, exposing unborn children before birth.

Unlike many toxic substances, EDCs can cause harmful effects even at extremely low levels of exposure. This makes them especially dangerous, as individuals may be exposed without being aware of it.

Where are these chemicals found?

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are commonly present in:

  • Food packaging materials
  • Baby bottles and feeding containers
  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • Cooking oils and food contact materials
  • Household cleaning products
  • Plastic items used at home, in schools, and workplaces

Because these products are part of everyday life, continuous exposure is almost unavoidable.

Why women are more vulnerable

According to the WHO, women are especially vulnerable to hormonal disruption during critical life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. In addition, many products marketed specifically to women—such as makeup, perfumes, nail polish, and hair-care products—often contain EDCs, increasing women’s exposure on a daily basis.

Serious consequences for children and future generations

WHO experts warn that exposure to EDCs during fetal development can increase the risk of:

  • Low birth weight
  • Preterm birth
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Long-term fertility problems

Research also links phthalates to certain cancers, premature birth, and reproductive disorders. Bisphenol A (BPA) has been associated with breast cancer, damage to reproductive organs, reduced sperm quality, infertility, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

Regulatory gaps and lack of consumer awareness

Despite decades of scientific evidence, there is still no global ban on the use of phthalates and BPA. In many countries, consumers are not informed about the chemical contents of plastic and other everyday products, leaving women and children unknowingly exposed to harmful substances.

IPEN—representing more than 670 organizations worldwide—together with ARECO–RWANDA NZIZA, is calling for stronger regulations that prioritize public health over industrial profits. They also advocate for consumers’ right to know which chemicals are present in the products they use, and for greater investment in safer, non-toxic alternatives.

A call to protect health and the future

Campaign organizers emphasize that reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals is one of the most effective strategies for protecting reproductive health, safeguarding women and children, and securing a healthier future for generations to come. Increased public awareness, stricter laws, and responsible manufacturing are essential steps toward eliminating these invisible but dangerous threats.
